Purchasing Agent, Windsor Locks, CT
Reports to: Purchasing Manager
Overview:
This position is responsible for overseeing the purchasing of all landscaping needs for our commercial landscaping customers. Items include greengoods such as plants, trees, shrubs, annual, perennials and hardgoods which includes stone, pavers, fertilizers, grass seeds, and soil amendments. This position requires daily interaction with our eight Wholesales Distribution Center Site Managers, Site Office Managers, Sales team, Hardgoods and Greengoods Buyers, General Manager, Accounting Department, Vendors, and freight companies.
Responsibilities:
- Processing and sourcing the day-to-day purchases of both greengoods and hardgoods for our eight Wholesale Distribution Centers.
- Developing effective relationships with vendors which includes discussing availability of and shipping of products.
- Managing the West Coast Early Order Programs. Consolidates information from the yards on a weekly basis, tracks sales in comparison to prior years, works with buyers to adjust orders to cover sales, puts stop sells in place when necessary.
- Monitoring and managing the Company’s inventory levels at each Site by arranging for the transfer of products within the Company to prevent overstocking.
- Writing product codes in the purchasing database.
- Working with our greengoods Purchasing Assistant and General Manager to determine sell prices based on existing products and margins.
- Being the “Customer Service” for our eight Site Managers for all purchasing needs.
- Maintaining depth in the position through cross-training.
- Assisting with entering data of all seasonal data projects as assigned by the Purchasing Manager and/or General Manager.
- Assisting our Buyers with any overflow of purchasing duties.
Requirements:
- 3+ years of administrative experience; horticulture and/or landscape purchasing would be ideal, but we are willing to train the right candidate.
- High level of organization and planning skills with a specific ability to prioritize activities.
- Ability and willingness to work in a fast-paced environment with seasonal work demands which includes working occasional half days on Saturdays from April through October
- Ability to work both independently and within a team.
- Excellent oral communication and listening skills.
- Proficient in computer applications/software, with an emphasis on Excel.
- A background in horticulture or landscaping is preferred though not required.
