Overview

Seeking energetic individuals for year-round/full time sales position enabling you to achieve a long-term career in horticultural sales selling to Landscape Contractors and Homeowners.

Duties include sales, inventory management, and maintenance of our extensive outdoor displays.

The successful candidates are self-motivated, and team oriented with a passion for working outdoors. Sales and Supervisory experience are a PLUS!

Responsibilities

Below are many of the individual responsibilities of this position. Northern Nurseries has also established Standards For Customer Service for all positions, which for this position are attached, and which give more detail as to what is expected regarding carrying out the following responsibilities and more.

  • Handles incoming customer calls, greets customers, determines their needs, writes orders, arranges for the loading of the customer’s vehicle, and overall, ensures that the customer has a positive experience that exceeds their expectations.
  • Actively solicits quoting opportunities from the accounts that were assigned to this individual, as well as responding in a timely manner to any and all customer requests for a quotation.  Works with the Site Manager, General Manager, and Purchasing Department to maximize sales and profit margin opportunities. Works within the margin guidelines established by the Site Manager and General Manager.  On occasion you will be directed to work with the customer service personnel at the Robert Baker Company and/or Medford Nurseries should it be deemed necessary to secure the order for the Robert Baker Companies as a whole, of which Northern Nurseries is a part.
  • Locates product through the use of vendor availabilities and by interacting with the Purchasing Department to fulfill the requests of the customers.  Northern Nurseries prides itself on our reputation for quality, which should never be sacrificed without the approval of the General Manager and written approval from the customer.
  • In addition to answering customer inquiries, initiates customer contact by telemarketing, recommends substitutions, and solicit add-on sales.
  • Schedules deliveries and direct shipments. Also tags/secures material so it is available for delivery or pick up per the customer’s request.
  • Provides technical support to the customers when necessary, or per their request, which on occasion will require going to their jobsites or place of business.
  • Actively participates in local Industry Trade Association meetings and Trade Shows.
  • Provides support and back up to the Outside Sales team including assisting them with quoting, sourcing, technical support, communicating availability and quality, customer complaints, and scheduling and tracking shipments.
  • Assists in monitoring site standards by communicating any deficiencies to the Site Manager (irrigation, spacing, disease or insect problems, debris, plant quality, signage, etc.)
  • Assists the Site Manager with markdowns by determining perceived value and recommending items that should be considered for markdowns, site specials, and promotions.
  • Assists with merchandising and impulse displays in high traffic areas including the showroom – ensures that signage is current and accurate and that we are changing displays on a regular basis to promote specials, seasonal items, color, etc.
  • Participates in numerous training activities to become thoroughly educated in all of the product line available through Northern Nurseries.
  • Any other duties that may be reasonably assigned by the Site Manager.

Requirements

  • Retail, wholesale, or distribution related sales and/or operations experience within the nursery or landscape industry.
  • Advanced understanding of customer service skills and the aptitude for broadcasting these skills to a wide range of customers.
  • Working knowledge of the horticulture industry.
  • The ability to plan and prioritize activities.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a fast-paced environment with seasonal work demands.
  • Ability to work independently, yet take a role in a team-oriented structure.
  • Excellent oral/written communication and listening skills.
